Frequently Asked Questions

Please reach us at hq@ikdhonbu.com if you cannot find an answer to your question.

IKD Honbu is the headquarters dojo for the International Karate Daigaku (IKD) in Toronto, Canada. We teach traditional Japanese Shotokan Karate to students of all ages and experience levels, guided by the IKD philosophy of discipline, respect, and lifelong learning.
Learn more about the International Karate Daigaku at www.internationalkaratedaigaku.com.

We welcome students from age 4 and up — children, teens, adults, and families. Classes are structured to suit different age groups and skill levels, from complete beginners to advanced black belts.

Yes! We offer two free trial classes for beginners or anyone new to our dojo. This gives you the opportunity to experience our welcoming training environment and meet our instructors before joining.

You can wear comfortable athletic clothing such as a T-shirt and track pants for your first classes. Once you decide to join, we’ll guide you on how to get your karate uniform (gi).
We have male and female change rooms available at the dojo. However, for convenience, we encourage young children to arrive already dressed in their uniform or athletic clothing, ready to train.

Classes are held at our Toronto dojo throughout the week, with programs available for children, teens, adults, and families. Please visit www.ikdhonbu.com for our current class schedule.

The IKD Passport is an official record of your membership within the International Karate Daigaku. It documents your progress, grading results, and participation in seminars, tournaments, and other IKD events.

Our children’s classes help build confidence, focus, coordination, and discipline — all within a positive and structured environment. For our youngest group (ages 4–6), parents or caregivers are welcome to participate as well.

No experience is needed! Many of our members start as beginners. Our instructors will guide you step-by-step, helping you develop a strong foundation and progress at your own pace.

Students progress through a structured system of kyu (colored belts) and dan (black belt) ranks following the official IKD syllabus. Gradings are conducted under certified IKD examiners.

IKD Honbu members enjoy a wide range of events throughout the year, including:

  • Annual IKD Honbu Karate Camp held each summer — open to all ages and ranks.

  • Provincial and National Tournaments, where students can challenge themselves in friendly competition.

  • World Championships and International Events hosted by IKD, connecting our members with karateka from around the world.
These experiences are a great way to learn, grow, and celebrate being part of the global International Karate Daigaku family.

We follow traditional Shotokan etiquette — bowing when entering or leaving, showing respect to instructors and fellow students, keeping the dojo clean, and maintaining a positive, humble spirit during training.

You can register online at www.ikdhonbu.com or in person at the dojo. New students are encouraged to take their two free trial classes before registering.
